Commue, Gideon

Gideon Commue was a descendant of the Wangunk tribe who had removed to the Tunxis community in Farmington, Connecticut.  In 1761 he enlisted in Captain John Peterson’s 4th Company and the following year in Captain Eldad Lewis’s 7th Company from Southington. In 1762 and 1765 Commue’s name appears on a petition to the Connecticut General Assembly by a group of male descendants of the original 17th century Wangunk proprietors requesting sale of the Wangunk reservation in Chatham, Connecticut.  He was among those Brothertown who sought refuge at Stockbridge, Massachusetts.  He received 50 acres of land there in May of 1766.  He still resided there in 1780 when he and other Tunxis refugees requested financial assistance from the Connecticut General Assembly to be able to keep their schoolmaster, Daniel Simon.
