Weckpistick

Weckpistic, or Joan, was a Wangunk tribal member whose name appears on a 1673 confirmatory deed to Middletown, Connecticut as an heir and successor to Sowheage, the seventeenth century Wangunk leader.  She was one of the proprietors of the Wangunk land in Chatham, Connecticut.  Her name has been translated by some 18^th century Wangunk as “a little white.”  Joseph Barrett, Indian Proprietors of Mattebeseck and Their Descendants (n.d.).  IP 1.2.138.
